FUTURE VILLAGE

FUTURE VILLAGE

Nepal

On 25 April 2015, Nepal was struck by a 7.8-magnitude earthquake, the country’s most devastating since 1934. The disaster killed nearly 9,000 people and injured more than 22,000. Most buildings in Nepal were not designed to be earthquake-resistant.

In Kathmandu, the capital, approximately 90% of buildings were severely damaged or destroyed. Thousands of homes collapsed across multiple districts, with entire villages flattened, particularly those near the epicentre. As a result, the majority of the population was left homeless.

In collaboration with Future Village, a Nepal-based NGO, IDEA organised a post-earthquake reconstruction programme titled “Build the Home, Build the Future.”

The initiative aimed to support villagers in rebuilding their homes using earthquake-resistant construction methods. The project was conceived as a model for other villages and communities, as well as a reference for future resettlement and reconstruction efforts.

Importantly, the programme addressed a critical gap by supporting communities that had been overlooked by government and international relief efforts following the initial emergency response. However, long-term redevelopment and rehousing support for affected populations remained limited.
