Our Classes @ Studio (Spring Timetable)

Art Academic: Architectural Drawing for Youth (Ages 8-16)

Explore fresh techniques in drawing and deepen your understanding of buildings and cities in this architectural drawing workshop.

​

What to expect: In this workshop, participants will dive into the world of drawing, experimenting with various media to create both large and small-scale drawings on paper that they can take home. They'll explore techniques like perspective, scale, color, light, and texture in their artwork.

Participants will create drawings of both real and imagined buildings. As they work, they'll learn about architecture and the work of architects from different cultures and around the globe, using these as inspiration to design their own unique buildings.

Children will:

  • Learn to draw buildings in different scales, in 3D, and from various angles.

  • Experiment with a range of media on paper.

  • Develop the skills to design and convey ideas through drawing.

  • Gain insights into architecture and urban design from around the world.

  • Understand the processes architects use in their designs.

Cartoon Animation Club  (Ages 8-16) 

​

In this course, children will dive into the world of coding by creating interactive stories inspired by the imaginative style of renowned designer and artist such as Saul Bass. Over the course, participants will craft captivating narratives and turn them into interactive, text-based games using Twine, a user-friendly coding platform. This course blends creative writing with coding skills, providing a fun and educational experience where kids bring their unique stories to life through technology.

What to expect: Our course starts by introducing a famous cartoon, where young participants will draw inspiration from the designer’s imaginative world and creative techniques. Following this, they will embark on creating their fantastical worlds.

 

The course will focus on learning Twine, a tool for crafting interactive game worlds. Participants will get hands-on experience with basic coding concepts, including Booleans, if & else statements, and variables, to build engaging, text-based interactive stories.

 

This workshop offers a mix of structured guidance, individual creative work, and collaborative brainstorming. Young people will:

  • Learn to draw buildings in different scales, in 3D, and from various angles.

  • Discover famous artist's’ design approach and worldbuilding techniques.

  • Learn the fundamentals of storytelling and narrative design.

  • Understand basic coding principles and their application to logic problems.

  • Visualize and map out storylines.Build confidence in using creative technologies.

Stop Motion Animation for Youth (Ages 8-13)

​

In this workshop, young participants will immerse themselves in the realms of renowned artists and filmmakers, exploring their creative processes and captivating characters. They will then use this inspiration to design their own unique characters and craft an imaginative, fantastical world for them to inhabit.

 

What to expect: In this engaging workshop, participants will explore 2D techniques to create backdrops for animation and learn the art of stop-motion to animate their characters, bringing stories to life through movement and mark-making.

 

The course begins with an introduction to the project, followed by film-watching or mixed media to understand the work of the artists and filmmakers. Here, participants will draw inspiration from the characters, stories, backdrops, and props they encounter. Back in the studio, they will delve into why these elements resonate with them and begin developing their own characters.

 

Participants will then create a short background story and develop character turnarounds and storyboards. They will craft 2D puppets and scenes for their backdrops, along with any additional props needed to complete their narratives. Using Stop Motion Studio on iPads, they will shoot their short films, incorporating a soundtrack inspired by the filmmakers’ unique musical style. Frame by frame, their characters will interact within the scenes, culminating in a screening and celebration of their animated creations.

 

Young people will:

  • Learn to draw buildings in different scales, in 3D, and from various angles.

  • Discover the famous artists and filmmakers and its influence on storytelling.

  • Learn how to storyboard and develop a character profile for animation.

  • Create 2D animation puppets and dynamic backgrounds.

  • Produce stop-motion animations using iPads.

  • Collaborate as a team to complete a stop-motion project.

Poems x Art Club for Youth (Ages 5-13)

Welcome to Poems x Art Club! This course is designed to guide participants through a transformative creative process, moving from perception to inspiration to creation. Our goal is to help participants connect their thoughts, feelings, and sensory experiences with the various artistic elements around them. Through a series of hands-on activities, participants will experiment with different mediums and materials, fostering a deeper understanding of how to perceive, interpret, and create art. Each lesson encourages self-awareness and artistic expression, from exploring poems through drawing and collage to crafting sculptures and stop-motion films.

What to expect: Throughout the course, participants will embark on a rich artistic journey, starting with an introduction to the core concepts of perception, inspiration, and creation. They will engage in diverse activities, including:

  • Exploring Poetic Inspiration: Participants will delve into poems to understand how words can transform into visual art. They will use various artistic techniques to interpret and visualize poetic elements, creating drawings, collages, and sculptures inspired by their findings.

  • Creating Collages: Building on their understanding of poetic imagery, participants will create collages representing different atmospheres and scenes, incorporating elements of light, texture, and color to bring their artistic visions to life.

  • Sculpting Characters: Inspired by Maya Angelou's "Life Doesn’t Frighten Me," students will design and sculpt 3D characters that embody bravery and creativity, using materials like Modroc or clay.

Animating Art: In the final weeks, students will animate their creations using stop-motion techniques, bringing together their drawings, collages, and sculptures into dynamic short films. They will learn to use iPads or other tablets to create and edit their animations, culminating in a screening of their work.​​
