Designing for Age: How Cities Are Reimagining Architecture for the Elderly
“The ultimate goal of the architect… is to create a paradise. Every house, every product of architecture should be a fruit of our endeavor to build an earthly paradise for people.”
- Alvar Aalto.
Abstract
As the world spins day by day, everything on Earth is constantly changing. People, nature, technology and living things. However, what if the cities we live in nowadays become challenging obstacles instead of homes and what we call 'home'? As time goes by and people grow older, the world’s aging rate goes higher and higher each year. Still, lots of urban spaces in different cities are only designed for the young, leaving millions of the elderly struggling to live a comfortable life. Unsafe crosswalks, inaccessible streets, buildings without the correct safety measurements, and much more that fail to accommodate everyone in our society. As our lifespan increases, the inquiry and concern is no longer about if cities should adapt, but rather if architecture can help shape a future for the needs where aging does not translate to a loss of independence and freedom.

I am deeply passionate about studying architecture and pursuing this interest as my future career. My writing explores how design, space and cultural context are able to come together and create the impossible. With my work, I hope to continue developing my interest in this field through human experiences in a built environment.
